The New ‘Big Brother’: Mom and Dad? - New York Times- Spyware News

The last time I wrote to The Times in response to a Harlan Coben article — about soccer snacks, in 2006 — I vehemently disagreed with him. If your child is on hard drugs and sleeping with a dealer, as was the daughter of Harlan Coben’s friend, you’re probably not paying enough attention to your kid. A much simpler solution to monitoring a child’s behavior online is to keep computers out of bedrooms, and put them in common areas of the house. If the computers are in the living room, then the rest of the family is available for homework help and discussion. If we spy on our kids, especially in the absence of any evidence of misbehavior or dangerous behavior, aren’t we teaching them that it’s acceptable for an authority to spy on those in its care simply for their own good?
