MalwareScanner, or Malware Scanner, is a rogue anti-spyware application designed to scare you into purchasing MalwareScanner's full version. MalwareScanner is usually downloaded and installed manually. Once installed, MalwareScanner will run a scan of your computer and generate exaggerated spyware threats which are usually false positives.
When the scan is complete, the 'scan results' window appears which shows how many spyware threats your computer allegedly has. This tactic is an attempt to trick you into purchasing MalwareScanner's commercial version. In addition, MalwareScanner may generate annoying popup advertisements that may cause unstable system performance.

XP-Shield is a rogue anti-spyware application that once installed it will perform a scan that will result in exaggerated spyware threats. Once XP-Shield finishes the spyware scan, a warning message will pop up stating that XP-Shield has detected spyware and that you need to register to repair your computer. XP-Shield also shows legitimate Microsoft files, for example C:\Windows\System32\dllcache\pdh.dll, as malware on its threat results. XP-Shield's exaggerated threat reports are meant to scare you into purchasing the full version of the program.

AntiVirProtect. These popular rogue anti-spyware programs are reskinned and renamed to confuse unsuspecting computer users.
