If your computer is connected to the Internet, it's only a matter of time before you fall victim to spyware, viruses or hackers. Cyber criminals are constantly finding new ways to harm you and hide their software's existence, making it difficult to identify and remove.

Despite phishing schemes, spyware, and other internet security threats, an overwhelming majority of Americans claim to feel safe online, according to a recent poll sponsored by StopBadware. The Zogby International poll, which queried 6,678 people, found that 88 percent of internet users feel safe while using their personal computers to get online, while 84 percent believe they have the tools to protect themselves. McAfee and NCSA scanned consumer computers to see if the PCs were properly protected with anti-virus and anti-spyware software and firewalls, and found that 78 percent of the computers were inadequately protected. Weinstein and Teixeira agree that the results of these polls show the growing need for better education about online security risks. Both attended a Federal Trade Commission roundtable on April 1 to discuss strategies on how to get information to consumers about the dangers of phishing and other online risks. We need to get out the message that internet privacy and security require a bit more effort than people may realize. More Spyware News

A person sits down somewhere, writing a fresh virus, a novel practical application of Spyware. It is placed onto the Cyberspace and Anti-Computer virus and Anti-Spyware traffickers commence to evolve definitions to battle it, possibly even to halt it for good. These fixes are integrated into the fresh variations of the software they deal, or allot as freeware. Existent companies, businesses, and exploiters struggle to hold up with what to apply, overpowered, their line of life to the Net bets on it. |

The most important thing to keep in mind when trying to avoid malware on the Internet is behavior. Most malware nowadays depends on you doing something (i.e. visiting a site, opening an e-mail attachment, etc.). If you never do the wrong things, you will greatly minimize the chances of being compromised. |

The last time I wrote a piece on how to remove spyware from your computer was in 2006 . Time for an update, I think. Here's my perennial "How to Beat Spyware" howto, revised and updated for 2008 (and combined into a single file instead of two parts). Here's what to do if you suspect an infection on your Windows PC. (Please note these steps apply to both Windows XP and Vista.) 1) Are you ...
